Orthodontic Treatment for Overcrowded Teeth

Child with overcrowed teeth in need of orthodontic treatment at Dr. Tim Dumore & Team in Winnipeg, Manitoba.Having crowded teeth is not just an issue that can tarnish the appearance of your smile. The fact is, not only can crowded teeth appear unattractive, but they can also be quite harmful to your oral health. If you have overcrowded teeth, then you probably understand firsthand how challenging this condition can be. As your teeth struggle to vie for space in your mouth, you may start to notice increasing problems and discomfort in your mouth. We here at Dr. Tim Dumore & Team strongly advise that individuals who have overcrowded teeth get this issue addressed promptly to help ensure a better long-term prognosis for them.

Problems Associated with Overcrowded Teeth

While overcrowded teeth can be admittedly unattractive, that is not the only reason that it is important that you get treatment for your overcrowded teeth. It goes beyond a cosmetic concern and can lead to lasting problems with your bite alignment and oral health.

Overcrowded teeth can make it harder to keep your teeth clean. This can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Overcrowding can also increase the chances of you permanently damaging your teeth. They are more vulnerable to impact injuries, such as the type that could occur while playing sports.

You may get uneven wear and tear on your teeth, and some teeth may start to crack or break due to poor alignment caused by the overcrowding. Speech impediments may develop, making it harder to speak clearly. Finally, those who have overcrowded teeth may have pain when eating and chewing due to the position of their teeth.

Three Ways We Can Help Your Overcrowded Teeth

Fortunately, if you have overcrowded teeth, then there are several treatment options available to you to help address this dental concern. One way we may try to address your overcrowded teeth is with traditional dental braces. Braces are a type of fixed dental appliance that is affixed to your teeth and apply constant pressure to help ease your teeth into proper alignment. We do occasionally need to remove teeth for braces to be effective, which can help relieve the overcrowding while coaxing the teeth into proper alignment.

Patients who may not be good candidates for traditional dental braces may instead use clear dental aligners to treat their overcrowded teeth. Unlike traditional dental braces, these can be removed for up to two hours per day. They are more subtle and discreet than braces, making them an option for patients who may not want visible orthodontic treatment.

For some patients, a retainer can also adjust the alignment of their teeth. A retainer can also be beneficial to our patients who have already undergone other orthodontic treatment for their overcrowded teeth. We will custom fit a retainer to your mouth, helping to ensure that your teeth maintain their position after we adjust their alignment with orthodontic treatment.

If your teeth are overcrowded, then it is very important that you get treatment for it as soon as possible, as it can lead to many health complications later on in life.
