Braces for Kids

Dr Dumore and his team out having fun on the town Placing braces on your children's teeth will depend on several factors, though mainly, if it is needed for their dental health. At Tim Dumore, DMD & Team Orthodontics, we like to see every child at the age of seven for an orthodontic checkup. This helps us see how their teeth are coming in, if overcrowding is a problem, if baby teeth should be pulled to allow permanent teeth the space needed, if spaces need to be placed and more. This evaluation may prevent larger orthodontia work in the future. Dr. Dumore would love to meet with you and your child to evaluate and discuss their dental health and what you can do now to help.

Common Orthodontic Parent Questions about their Child's Teeth

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist as early as age seven. Dr. Dumore is frequently asked questions including:

What is the difference between early orthodontic treatment and regular orthodontic treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment is known in dentistry as Phase One. Phase one is an evaluation, during your child's evaluation, we can make predictions of what orthodontic treatment may be needed, and what we can do now to help permanent teeth come in correctly. By starting early interceptive treatment, including expansion, an active retainer or even partial braces, we can prevent larger issues from occurring.

Regular orthodontics is the procedure of placing the appropriate orthodontic device at the appropriate time. This may be a retainer, braces, or more, and is designed to move teeth or prevent teeth from shifting.

Why might my child need early treatment?

Early treatment can save you time and money. By noting those areas of potential problems before they become problems, we can prevent larger issues.

How will early treatment benefit my child in the long run?

Dr. Dumore's goal of early treatment is to correct, or assist, the growth of your child's jaw and incoming teeth. We try to prevent certain bite problems, such as the development of an underbite. Early treatment can also help your child have the room necessary for permanent teeth to come in properly, lessening the chance of needing one or more extractions in the future, saving your child pain, and saving you time and money.

These are just a few of the questions surrounding the topic of early orthodontic treatment for children. At this point, the orthodontist will evaluate whether your child will need orthodontic treatment.

Does my Child Need Early Orthodontic Treatment?

We like to evaluate every child, an evaluation is a simple appointment. We particularly like to see a child if they have experienced any of the following:

•  Your child has had particularly early or late loss of baby teeth. In most cases, children start losing their baby teeth at age 5 and should have all of their permanent teeth by age 13.
•  Your child is experiencing difficulty in biting or chewing.
•  Your child breathes through their mouth, opposed to their nose.
•  Your child has continued to suck their thumb past the age of five.
•  Your child has speech difficulties or impediments.
•  Your child has protruding teeth, either their top or bottom teeth extend out much further than they should.
•  Your childs top arch and bottom arch are not closing together like they should.
•  Your child finds that their jaw shifts when they open or close their mouth, known as a crossbite.
•  Your child is visibly experiencing overcrowding issues by the age of seven.

Early Orthodontic Treatment

Receiving early orthodontic treatment as a child can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, leaving little to no chance of extraction or surgery in the future.

At Dr. Dumore & Team Orthodontics, we can help your child's teeth come in with better placement, helping them avoid larger issues in their future. Our team will work with your child, ensuring they receive the appropriate treatments and options. We want your child's needs to be met with understanding and respect. Dr. Tim Dumore is available to answer all of your questions about braces and the various options to straighten your child's teeth, and help their permanent teeth come in with better spacing. Braces for Adults

Group of Dr Dumore staff Orthodontic treatment is generally thought of as a teenage rite of passage for most youth. Braces are not only for teens. Increasingly adults are seeking orthodontics whether they missed getting the work they needed done earlier, or if they are still unsatisfied with their appearance or function. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists states that one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. Dr. Dumore & Team Orthodontics can give you the smile you want, at any age. Our treatments vary in style, length of time, and even seen or unseen - we, can fix your teeth without anyone ever knowing. We would love to discuss your options with you following an evaluation.

Why should I get my teeth straightened?

Dr. Dumore is finding that many adults are choosing to receive orthodontic treatment for a few reasons:

•  Patients are increasingly learning and understanding the importance of maintaining their dental health.
•  Patients want to feel better about their appearance, and adjusting the look of your teeth makes a large impact on your appearance.
•  Patients want to improve their function, and not make dietary changes based on the status of their teeth. A common dental disorder is TMJ problems and malocclusion disorders, which can affect your function.

We are seeing adults everywhere take advantage of the opportunity to receive orthodontic care, and now you can too.

Common Reasons for Adult Patients Seeking Orthodontic Treatment

Some of the most common reasons a patient may inquire or seek orthodontic treatment includes:

•  The patient has a misaligned bite, known as a malocclusion, this dental problem means that the patient's teeth do not fit together like they should. There may even be gaps when closing your mouth.
•  The patient may have gaps between their teeth, or find that their teeth are overcrowded, pushing some teeth awkwardly out of alignment and allowing for hidden spots for bacteria to remain and cause decay.
•  The patient may be experiencing abnormal jaw tiredness or pain, common symptoms for patients suffering with TMJ disorders. A jaw out of alignment has even been associated with ear pain and migraines.
•  Patients want a smile that they can feel proud to share.

Orthodontic Treatment Options for Adults

Many of our adult patients feel that they have surpassed the age when having metal braces is socially acceptable. We don't want you to be discouraged from seeking the orthodontia work that you need. There are options available. Today's orthodontic treatment options offer both variations in traditional metal braces, and other clear dental appliances that are designed to move your teeth comfortably, aesthetically, and customizable. We offer these various types of braces:

•  Clear Braces: Also known as ceramic braces. This system works much the same way as traditional metal braces, the only difference is in the material we use.Ceramic braces use the same size and shape brackets as metal braces, using tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend help them blend in with your teeth. We can even place tooth colored wires.
•  Invisaglin: Invisalign is a system of clear plastic aligners that are customized to fit your teeth. We create a model of your teeth in their current position, and a model of your teeth in the desired position. The dental lab then creates a series of aligners that are designed to slowly move your teeth into that position, with changing the aligner every so often to the next one in the series. This system is not only invisible, it also means less time in the chair, we are able to schedule far fewer office visits, saving you time and money.
•  Traditional Metal Braces: Time tested, the traditional metal braces have been a standard in orthodontics. The cost is generally the cheapest, and patients know what to expect.

Orthodontics for Adults versus Orthodontics for Youth

A large difference between orthodontic work for adults and children or teens is the status of the jawbone. We are able to more easily manipulate a younger teens jaw as it is still growing. An adult's jawbone is grown. This may mean that we need to surgically alter the positioning of their jaw through orthognathic surgery to align the jawbones.

Other differences include preparatory work. We may need to deal with gum disease, or missing teeth, or other restoration work before proceeding with the orthodontic process.

At Dr. Dumore & Team Orthodontics, we recognize that adults and children have different needs, and require different styles of attention and care. Our team will work with you to ensure you receive the appropriate treatments and options, we want your needs to be met with understanding and respect from us. Dr. Tim Dumore is available to answer all of your questions about braces and the various options to straighten your teeth. Types of Braces

Group photo of Dr Dumore's staff There are options when considering braces. Many patients are aware of the traditional metal braces, which may be sufficient for many, but there are other various styles to suit every person and lifestyle. At Dr. Dumore & Team Orthodontics we are happy to evaluate your needs, show you your options, and make recommendations based on your situation. Dr. Dumore knows that our patients come from many different stages in life, and he wants you to get the orthodontic care that you need to improve your bite, function, and aesthetics. We ask that our patients become knowledgeable in their options in order to find their best fit.

Various styles of braces includes:

Clear Braces

Clear braces uses ceramic materials. Ceramic is shaded to match your teeth, making the brackets less visible. Many patients find this to be aesthetically much more pleasing versus metal braces. Ceramic braces are most often used on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. We can even place clear wires.

Ceramic brackets are not as durable as metal brackets, breakage can occur, patients need to take extra caution with their ceramic brackets.

Clear Aligners

Dr. Dumore can customize a series of clear plastic aligners that fit over your teeth, serving as a modern twist to traditional braces. Patients change their aligner to the next one in the series every so many prescribed days. This system is quickly becoming a favorite, particularly with our adult orthodontic patients because the aligners are clear and almost invisible. Not only invisible, but the aligners are also removable, allowing our patients to remove them while they eat, drink, and even for the occasionally special occasion when you want to look extra nice. Patients also love how easy it is to brush and floss, no working around brackets and wires.

In-Ovation® Braces

In-Ovation® braces are self-ligating brackets. That means they use a clip that is built into the bracket to hold the wire in place. No more rubber bands. This system works with the wire to control movements during alignment. Traditional braces use elastic ties or wire to hold the wire tightly in place, which can cause more friction and discomfort.

Traditional Metal Braces

The most common style of braces applied is the traditional metal brackets and wires. This system is tried and true, with results that patients trust and offers Dr. Dumore the most hands on control of your teeth as they move into position. Traditional metal braces are considered the most cost effective and treatment effective.

At Dr. Dumore & Team Orthodontics, we understand that our patients come in all ages, and in all phases. We are proud to offer so many variations to get the orthodontic work done that can improve our patient’s bite and the positioning of their teeth. Dr. Tim Dumore is available to answer all of your questions about braces, including what style may be most appropriate for your situation. Invisalign®

You can get the look you want with Invisalign®. When considering your options for orthodontic work, ask Dr. Dumore about the Invisalign® system. It can straighten your teeth without the use of metal brackets. In fact, patients love the clear, nearly invisible look. Dr. Dumore can show you how to get the look you want discreetly.

What is Invisalign®?

A modern take on traditional braces, the Invisalign® system will straighten your teeth, helping you achieve the smile you've always wanted, in a nearly invisible way. Dr. Dumore uses advanced 3D imaging to keep an accurate view of your teeth in their current position, and he can then create a model of the desired end result. With an Invisalign® treatment plan created, he can then order a series of custom, clear aligners designed to slowly shift your teeth to their final position.

Once your aligners are ready, the patient will wear each aligner in the series for about two weeks, or as prescribed by Dr. Dumore, and then replace the aligner with the next one in the series. Your Invisalign® treatment time will be determined by Dr. Dumore based on your specific needs.

How will Invisalign® impact my day?

Patients love how little Invisalign® impacts their life in comparison to metal braces. Invisalign®:

•  You do not have to alter your diet for Invisalign. Do you want to eat something sticky or crunchy? Simply remove your Invisalign and then replace it when you are done.
•  Is nearly invisible. Most people that you engage in conversations with will never see your Invisalign appliance.
•  You can brush and floss your teeth without interference. Patients simply remove the device, brush and floss as normal, brush their aligner, and replace it.
•  You can remove your aligners, once in awhile, on those special nights, when you want to look your best.
•  With Invisalign, patients do not need to change a thing, they can continue their day-to-day activities.
•  Patients love that with Invisalign, they do not have to hide their smile.
•  Patients love that they get to spend less time in the chair, Dr. Dumore can see you, and your progress, much less frequently.
•  No metal braces, no brackets, no wires. Invisalign does not cause sore spots, or irritation, because there is no metal rubbing.
•  Lastly, Invisalign allows the patient to view the end results through our virtual model, you get to see your virtual results and treatment plan before you start, so you can preview how your straight teeth will look once your treatment is complete.
