Clear Aligners
Winnipeg, Manitoba

Patient holding Clear Aligner Tray provided by Winnipeg Orthodontist at Dr. Tim Dumore & Team. When your teeth are crooked, your entire life can be affected. Not only do crooked teeth affect the quality of your smile, but they can also affect your oral health by causing uneven tooth wear and pain in your temporomandibular joint. Metal braces have been used for decades to fix crooked teeth. While they are effective, they are often the source of great self-consciousness, particularly for older teens and adults. At Dr. Tim Dumore & Team, we offer an alternative – clear aligners.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the traditional treatment for crooked teeth. They are a highly effective treatment and are still popular to this day. Metal braces consist of three major components. Metal brackets are bonded to the fronts of your teeth on your first visit, and they remain in place for the duration of your treatment. Metal bands are placed on your back teeth, which anchor the archwires. The archwires attach to each bracket with elastic O-rings and are responsible for the movement and stabilization of your teeth. Metal braces are commonly used for correcting the teeth of young teens between the ages of 11 and 13. However, older teens and adults often find the visibility of metal braces more embarrassing than their crooked teeth.

What are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are an alternative to traditional metal braces. They are made from a hard plastic that is designed from 3-dimensional virtual impressions of your mouth. In place, these aligners are practically invisible against your teeth. They are also removable. However, for the best results, they should be worn for 20 to 22 hours every day, and should only be taken out to eat or brush and floss your teeth.

How Do They Work?

Clear aligners consist of a series of aligners. You are meant to wear each aligner for two weeks at a time, and the next aligner is slightly different from the one before it. The hard plastic of the aligners puts pressure on your teeth. This, in turn, puts pressure on your periodontal ligaments (the ligaments that hold your teeth in place). This pressure forces your ligaments to widen. The aligners work to guide your teeth into their proper positions.

Your treatment time using clear aligners will vary based on your specific situation. Typically, treatment lasts between 9 and 15 months. Most patients see results in less than a year. In rare cases, treatment may last up to 2 years. Depending on your needs, you may go through anywhere from 18 to 30 sets of aligners.

Benefits of Clear Aligners

There are several benefits associated with clear aligners:
•  Because they are made from clear plastic, they are practically invisible on your teeth. There is no need to worry about embarrassing metal mouth.
•  You can enjoy all of your favorite foods. Traditional braces limit what you can eat. Certain foods (whole apples, corn on the cob, sticky foods) can dislodge the brackets and bend your wires. With clear aligners, you simply take them out to eat.
•  Brushing and flossing are easier. You do not have to maneuver around brackets and wires. You can brush and floss as normal.
•  Clear aligners tend to be more comfortable than traditional braces.
•  Less dental visits are required.
•  Your overall treatment time is less than what it would be with traditional braces.

If your smile, and oral health, have been affected by crooked teeth, but you want to avoid traditional metal braces, you may be eligible for clear aligners. Contact Dr. Tim Dumore & Team today to learn more.
