Placing braces on your children's teeth will depend on several factors, though mainly, if it is needed for their dental health. At Dr. Tim Dumore & Team Orthodontics, we like to see every child at the age of seven for an orthodontic checkup. This helps us see how their teeth are coming in, if overcrowding is a problem, if baby teeth should be pulled to allow permanent teeth the space needed and more. This evaluation may prevent larger orthodontic work in the future. Dr. Dumore would love to meet with you and your child to evaluate and discuss their dental health and what you can do now to help.
Common Orthodontic Parent Questions about their Child's Teeth
The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist as early as age seven. Dr. Dumore is frequently asked questions including:
What is the difference between early orthodontic treatment and regular orthodontic treatment?Early orthodontic treatment is known as Phase One. Phase One is early treatment in which we can intercept larger orthodontic issues from occurring. Orthodontic appliances such as palatal expanders, space maintainers and more are used to encourage proper growth.
Why might my child need early treatment?Early treatment can save you time and money. By noting those areas of potential problems before they become problems, we can prevent larger issues.
How will early treatment benefit my child in the long run?Dr. Dumore's goal of early treatment is to correct, or assist, the growth of your child's jaw and incoming teeth. Early treatment can also help your child have the room necessary for permanent teeth to come in properly, lessening the chance of needing one or more extractions in the future, saving your child pain, and saving you time and money.
These are just a few of the questions surrounding the topic of early orthodontic treatment for children. At this point, the orthodontist will evaluate whether your child will need orthodontic treatment.
Does my Child Need Early Orthodontic Treatment?
It is recommended that every child see an orthodontist at age 7. We particularly like to see a child if they have experienced any of the following:
• |
Your child has had particularly early or late loss of baby teeth. In most cases, children start losing their baby teeth at age 5 and should have all of their permanent teeth by age 13. |
• |
Your child is experiencing difficulty in biting or chewing. |
• |
Your child breathes through their mouth, opposed to their nose. |
• |
Your child has continued to suck their thumb past the age of five. |
• |
Your child has speech difficulties or impediments. |
• |
Your child has protruding teeth, either their top or bottom teeth extend out much further than they should. |
• |
Your child's top arch and bottom arch are not closing together like they should. |
• |
Your child finds that their jaw shifts when they open or close their mouth, known as a crossbite. |
• |
Your child is visibly experiencing overcrowding issues by the age of seven. |
Early Orthodontic Treatment
Receiving early orthodontic treatment as a child can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, leaving little to no chance of extraction or surgery in the future.

Braces for AdultsBraces for Adults
Winnipeg, ManitobaOrthodontic treatment is generally thought of as a teenage rite of passage for most youth. Braces are not only for teens. Increasingly adults are seeking orthodontics whether they missed getting the work they needed done earlier, or if they are still unsatisfied with their appearance or function. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists states that one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. Dr. Dumore & Team Orthodontics can give you a smile to feel confident about, at any age. Our treatments vary in style, length of time, and even seen or unseen - we, can fix your teeth without anyone ever knowing. We would love to discuss your options with you following a consultation.
Why should I get my teeth straightened?
Dr. Dumore is finding that many adults are choosing to receive orthodontic treatment for a few reasons:
• |
Patients are increasingly learning and understanding the importance of maintaining their dental health. |
• |
Patients want to feel better about their appearance, and adjusting the look of your teeth makes a large impact on your appearance. |
• |
Patients want to improve their function, and not make dietary changes based on the status of their teeth. A common dental disorder is TMJ problems and malocclusion disorders, which can affect your function. |
We are seeing adults everywhere take advantage of the opportunity to receive orthodontic care, and now you can too.
Common Reasons for Adult Patients Seeking Orthodontic Treatment
Some of the most common reasons a patient may inquire or seek orthodontic treatment includes:
• |
The patient has a misaligned bite, known as a malocclusion, this dental problem means that the patient's teeth do not fit together like they should. There may even be gaps when closing your mouth. |
• |
The patient may have gaps between their teeth, or find that their teeth are overcrowded, pushing some teeth awkwardly out of alignment and allowing for hidden spots for bacteria to remain and cause decay. |
• |
The patient may be experiencing abnormal jaw tiredness or pain, common symptoms for patients suffering with TMJ disorders. A jaw out of alignment has even been associated with ear pain and migraines. |
• |
Patients want a smile that they can feel proud to share. |
Orthodontic Treatment Options for Adults
Many of our adult patients feel that they have surpassed the age when having metal braces is socially acceptable. We don't want you to be discouraged from seeking the orthodontic work that you need. There are options available. Today's orthodontic treatment options offer both variations in traditional metal braces, clear braces and clear aligners. We offer these various types of braces:
• |
Clear Braces: Also known as ceramic braces. This system works much the same way as traditional metal braces, the only difference is in the material we use.Ceramic braces use the same size and shape brackets as metal braces, using tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend help them blend in with your teeth. Clear Aligners: Clear Aligners is a system of clear plastic aligners that are customized to fit your teeth. We create a model of your teeth in their current position, and a model of your teeth in the desired position. Then Dr. Dumore creates a series of aligners that are designed to slowly move your teeth into that position, with changing the aligner every so often to the next one in the series. This system has many benefits, not only is it invisible, it also means less time in the chair, we are able to schedule far fewer office visits, saving you time and money. |
• |
Traditional Metal Braces: Time tested, the traditional metal braces have been a standard in orthodontics. Our metal braces are small and easier to clean around. We can place coloured elastics over the brackets! |
Orthodontics for Adults versus Orthodontics for Youth
A large difference between orthodontic work for adults and children or teens is the status of the jawbone. We are able to more easily manipulate a younger teens jaw as it is still growing. An adult's jawbone is grown. This may mean that we need to surgically alter the positioning of their jaw through orthognathic surgery to align the jawbones.
Other differences include preparatory work. We may need to deal with gum disease, or missing teeth, or other restoration work before proceeding with the orthodontic process.

Types of Braces There are options when considering braces. Many patients are aware of the traditional metal braces, which may be sufficient for many, but there are other various styles to suit every person and lifestyle. At Dr. Dumore & Team Orthodontics we are happy to evaluate your needs, show you your options, and make recommendations based on your situation. Dr. Dumore knows that our patients come from many different stages in life, and he wants you to get the orthodontic care that you need to improve your bite, function, and aesthetics. We ask that our patients become knowledgeable in their options in order to find their best fit.
Various styles of braces includes:
Clear braces uses ceramic materials. Ceramic is shaded to match your teeth, making the brackets less visible. Many patients find this to be aesthetically much more pleasing versus metal braces. Ceramic braces are most often used on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns.
Ceramic brackets are not as durable as metal brackets, breakage can occur, patients need to take extra caution with their ceramic brackets. Learn more about Clear Braces by Tim Dumore & Team.
Dr. Dumore can customize a series of clear plastic aligners that fit over your teeth, serving as a modern twist to traditional braces. Patients change their aligner to the next one in the series every so many prescribed days. This system is quickly becoming a favorite, particularly with our adult orthodontic patients because the aligners are clear and almost invisible. Not only invisible, but the aligners are also removable, allowing our patients to remove them while they eat and drink.. Patients also love how easy it is to brush and floss, no working around brackets and wires.
In-Ovation® braces are self-ligating brackets. That means they use a clip that is built into the bracket to hold the wire in place. No more rubber bands. This system works with the wire to control movements during alignment. Traditional braces use elastic ties or wire to hold the wire tightly in place, which can cause more friction and discomfort. Learn more about In-Ovation® self-ligating braces by Tim Dumore & Team.
The most common style of braces applied is the traditional metal brackets and wires. This system is tried and true, with results that patients trust and offers Dr. Dumore the most hands on control of your teeth as they move into position. Traditional metal braces are considered the most cost effective and treatment effective.

Clear Aligners You can get the look you want with Clear Aligners. When considering your options for orthodontic work, ask Dr. Dumore about the Clear Aligners system. It can straighten your teeth without the use of metal brackets. In fact, patients love the clear, nearly invisible look. Dr. Dumore can show you how to get the look you want discreetly.
What are Clear Aligners
A modern take on traditional braces, the Clear Aligners system will straighten your teeth, helping you achieve the smile you've always wanted, in a nearly invisible way. Dr. Dumore uses advanced 3D imaging to keep an accurate view of your teeth in their current position, and he can then create a model of the desired end result. With an Clear Aligners treatment plan created, he can then order a series of custom, clear aligners designed to slowly shift your teeth to their final position.
Once your aligners are ready, the patient will wear each aligner in the series for about two weeks, or as prescribed by Dr. Dumore, and then replace the aligner with the next one in the series. Your Clear Aligners treatment time will be determined by Dr. Dumore based on your specific needs.
How will Clear Aligners impact my day?
Patients love how little Clear Aligners impacts their life in comparison to metal braces.
• |
You do not have to alter your diet for Clear Aligners. Do you want to eat something sticky or crunchy? Simply remove your Clear Aligners and then replace it when you are done. |
• |
Is nearly invisible. Most people that you engage in conversations with will never see your Clear Aligners appliance. |
• |
You can brush and floss your teeth without interference. Patients simply remove the device, brush and floss as normal, brush their aligner, and replace it. |
• |
You can remove your aligners, once in awhile, on those special nights, when you want to look your best. |
• |
With Clear Aligners, patients do not need to change a thing, they can continue their day-to-day activities. |
• |
Patients love that with Clear Aligners, they do not have to hide their smile. |
• |
Patients love that they get to spend less time in the chair, Dr. Dumore can see you, and your progress, much less frequently. |
• |
No metal braces, no brackets, no wires. Clear Aligners does not cause sore spots, or irritation, because there is no metal rubbing. |
• |
Lastly, Clear Aligners allows the patient to view the end results through our virtual model, you get to see your virtual results and treatment plan before you start, so you can preview how your straight teeth will look once your treatment is complete. |

Before & After GalleryIrnie's Story #1 - Irnie: Pre–Treatment
Irnie came to our office because he was unhappy with his smile and wanted to do something about it.
Key Problems:
• |
Irnie's teeth were crooked and crowded
|
• |
His lower jaw was too far back, and as a result, the lower teeth too far back.
|
• |
The front teeth overlap 100%, leading to significant wearing.
|
• |
The plan for Irnie involved aligning the teeth within the 'arches' to prepare him for jaw surgery to bring the lower jaw forward. It was not necessary to pull any teeth in his case. |
#2 - Irnie: Progress
At this point, Irnie's teeth are aligned to fit together when the jaw is brought forward.
While the bite is still off significantly, he felt much better about his smile already, and you can begin to see him show some teeth in his smiling picture (which you can't in his initial 'smiling' photo)
#3 - Irnie: Final Results
For most patients who require jaw surgery, our goal is to be able to remove the braces at 6 months after the surgery. This was the case for Irnie and he was ecstatic with his result! His smile and bite are greatly improved and he is proud of his result.
The idea of jaw surgery can sound intimidating, but typically the recovery is quite fast and patients are surprised at how well it goes. No longer is it necessary to have the jaws wired shut, as was done in years gone by. For those with jaw imbalances, jaw surgery allows the orthodontist and oral surgeon to achieve a superior result with fewer compromises.
Nico's Story #1 - Nico: Crowded With Extractions
Nico presented to our office with less than optimal alignment of the teeth and bite, he had a mismatch of the upper and lower teeth. The lower front teeth were fused together and a lower front tooth was missing.
#2 - Nico: Crowded With Extractions
The plan for Nico was to place Headgear to create more space for the eye teeth. Later braces were placed on the teeth so they could be moved into the optimal position. We started Nico’s treatment without removing teeth but as we progressed through treatment, we removed 2 upper teeth.
Derek's Story #1 - Derek: Crowded Non-extraction
Derek presented at our office with crowding of the upper and lower teeth, with too much up-down over lap of his front teeth (overbite) and mismatch of the upper and lower jaws: the lower jaw was too far back.
#2 - Derek: Crowded Non-extraction
The plan for Derek involved upper and lower braces with bite correctors to help shift the teeth in to their proper position. It was not necessary to remove any permanent teeth.
Courtney's Story #1 - Courtney: CL II Surgical Treatment
Courtney presented at our office with a mismatch of the upper and lower jaws. The lower jaw was too far back. She had too much up- down overlap of her front teeth (overbite) and less than optimal alignment of the teeth and bite.
#2 - Courtney: CL II Surgical Treatment
The plan for Courtney involved upper and lower braces to move her teeth into the proper position.
#3 - Courtney: CL II Surgical Treatment
After her initial alignment of the teeth and jaws was achieved, the oral surgeon corrected the jaw mismatch with a mandibular advancement (bringing the lower jaw forward).
Krystin's Story #1 - Krystin: Surgical Treatment CL III
Krystin presented to our office with a mismatch of the upper and lower jaws. The lower front teeth were in front of the upper front teeth (underbite) with crowding of the upper teeth.
#2 - Krystin: Surgical Treatment CL III
The plan for Krystin was to extract 2 upper side teeth and one upper back tooth, align the teeth in their proper positions, followed by jaw surgery.
#3 - Krystin: Surgical Treatment CL III
The oral surgeon moved the upper jaw forward and the lower jaw back.
Bailey's Story #1 - Bailey: Gummy Smile
Bailey presented at our office with more gum showing when smiling than average, spacing of the upper teeth with less than optimal alignment, and mismatch of the upper and lower jaw with the lower jaw is too far back and the upper jaw too far down.
#2 - Bailey: Gummy Smile
The plan for Bailey was to place braces on the upper and lower teeth.
#3 - Bailey: Gummy Smile
After the initial alignment of teeth and jaws had been achieved, the oral surgeon moved the upper jaw upward and the lower jaw forward.
Nolan's Story #1 - Nolan: Crossbow Appliance
Nolan presented at our office with a mismatch of the upper and lower jaws.
#2 - Nolan: Crossbow Appliance
The lower jaw was too far back and there was too much front-back overlap of the front teeth (overjet) and too much up-down overlap of the front teeth (overbite).
Sydney's Story #1 - Sydney: Substituting Cuspids
Sydney presented at our office missing four adult teeth (upper laterals and lower second biscuspids). Baby teeth were still present at the time.
#2 - Sydney: Substituting Cuspids
The plan for Sydney was to remove the remaining baby teeth and allow the adult teeth 6-12 months to grow in before we started treatment. Once she was ready for treatment we closed all the spaces where Sydney was missing teeth with braces and substituted the upper eye teeth for the missing 'lateral incisor' teeth.
Hannah's Story #1 - Hannah: Phase 1 Lip Bumper
Hannah presented at our office with upper and lower crowding of the teeth and jaws. Her lower incisors were blocked out.
#2 - Hannah: Phase 1 Lip Bumper
The plan for Hannah was to extract three primary teeth and place a lip bumper for 6 months followed by a Lower Lingual Arch to regain space and to maintain space.
Tasha's Story #1 - Tasha: Phase 1 RPE
Tasha presented at our office with a lack of space for her upper cuspids. She had significant rotation of her upper lateral incisor.
#2 - Tasha: Phase 1 RPE
The plan for Tasha was to widen the upper jaw with a Rapid Palatal Expander to make room for her cuspids followed by partial upper braces to make room for cupids and to rotate her lateral incisor. Marlee's Story #1 - Marlee: Open Bite & CL II
Marlee presented at our office with a lower jaw that was too far back and a thumb sucking habit. Due to the habit there was not enough up-down overlap of the front teeth (open bite) the lower teeth were shifted back compared to the upper side teeth (CL II) with less than optimal alignment of the teeth and bite.
#2 - Marlee: Open Bite & CL II
The plan for Marlee was to widen the upper jaw with ‘tongue tamers’ to act as a reminder not to suck her thumb. Braces were placed on the teeth so we could move the teeth into their optimal positions.
#3 - Marlee: Open Bite & CL II
After the initial alignment of the teeth and jaws had been achieved, the oral surgeon surgically corrected the jaw-position problem. Post-surgical treatment was approximately 6 months with braces.
Melissa's Story #1 - Melissa: Impacted Cuspids
Melissa presented at our office with 2 impacted upper cuspids (eye teeth). There was too much up-down overlap of the front teeth (overbite) with less than optimal alignment of the teeth and bite.
#2 - Melissa: Impacted Cuspids
The plan for Melissa was to place upper and lower braces to move the teeth into their optimal position.
#3 - Melissa: Impacted Cuspids
At the appropriate time, we referred Melissa to the oral surgeon who located the tooth in the jaw and placed an attachment on it so we could then move it into the proper space. |
